Swamp Thing takes a dark turn on DC’s Black Label with Jeff Lemire taking over the writing on issue 1 of Green Hell.

Lemire wastes no time in getting into the mood and story; the residents of an island are counting their remaining days until the ocean floods their hilly peak and drowns them all. The water level is slowly rising, and to make matters worse, it seems there are few fish in the sea that surrounds them.

It’s got all the makings of drama and danger. The residents reach out for help, not realizing that the Parliaments of the Green, the Red, and the Rot have decided that it’s time to wipe out humans, and want to start things over from scratch. Enter a huge monster all green and powerful-like.

Artist Doug Mahnke, with colourist David Baron and letterer Steve Wands, keeps things spooky and exaggerated. But in a good, storytelling way. The art is detailed and descriptive, with vivid colouring. The sunrises are glorious, the threats are tangible, and the darkness is stark and frightening.

We’re off to a pulse-pounding strong start!

By Alan Spinney

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
