Cursed with an irremovable chainmail and sword, Sonja continues to carry out her mission into strange lands to find the tower of Merlyyn, filled with unknown creatures and foes. Something cursed lurks in the shadows, awaiting her. Sonja will need to muster every skill at her disposal to face down the monsters that stalk her.

Dan Abnett is no stranger to writing stories full of action and humor, as seen with this issue, there is a nice balance of sword and sorcery, with sprinkles of wit throughout. Having Red Sonja’s cursed chainmail accompany the story as the humorous narrator is welcomed as a nice foil to the Sonja’s serious demeanor. Abnett has created an interesting symbiotic relationship between Sonja and the chainmail that is symbolic of give and take contract agreements, which adds an interesting layer to this iteration of the character that hasn’t been playfully explored in previous incarnations. The story is fast-paced, well-paced, and pleasurable to pick up and read.

Emiliana Pinna handles the art duties for this issue, kicking the book off with action-packed pages and gorgeous double-page spread that is joyous to gaze at. Coupled with Luca Colandrea’s & Ellie Wright’s somber yet vibrant colors, in addition to Jeff Eckleberry’s lettering, the entire art team provides readers with a book that is entertaining and refreshing. This series continues to be a treat and revitalizes Red Sonja for new readers while providing something entertaining for veteran readers too. It’s an enjoyable series worth reading and isn’t letting up on the fantasy sword and sorcery which makes it worth adding to your pull list for new comic book day.
