As Sonja guides, a long-imprisoned Lanzlot to his former being, her quest to find Merlin will lead her to unexpected answers that will lead to unexpected consequences.

Writing/Plot: The nature of the cursed chainmail that possesses Red Sonja and its relationship to her as both an ally and enemy is a tightrope that Abnett writes enjoyably well. The chainmail is conniving, plotting very much against her as it does aid her, which makes this book an engaging read. You’re left wondering whether or not Sonja can ever trust her 2nd skin, and Abnett displays clearly that the level of trust is up for debate. The story is fun, fast-paced, and action-packed, making for a surprisingly quick read all things considered.

Art/Verdict: Luca Colandrea provides fun, action-packed layouts that are accompanied by Ellie Wright’s animated color work, matching the fast-paced tone of the writing. Colandrea does a good job choreographing some fight sequences and placing where big moments need to be via splash pages or in panels. Jeff Eckleberry does a fine job with the lettering, especially when channeling the voice of the cursed chainmail. This is another fun installment that makes one excited for the following issue. I recommend adding this to your pull list if you don’t have any sword and sorcery books on the roster.
