The undead Darkseid ravages his wrath across the universe, consuming life wherever he can find it.

Former enemies now turn allies as time is running out for the living to counteract Darkseid’s infected plague of new gods. What awaits the Lanterns out in the dark depths of space? What discoveries will earth’s heroes find that could aid their mission to prevent anti-life from its decrepit spread?

Writing/Plot: Darkseid has always been a threat to the universe, but seeing what an undead Darkseid can do is just as terrifying as a living one. Especially as he ravages planets, opening doom tubes and laying waste to anything that has a pulse. And what Tom Taylor does with this book continues to stun and surprise with nearly every page turn. Whether it’s earth’s heroes, the Sinestro Corps, or others, everyone witnesses and discovers the kind of horrors that Darkseid is up to, but none of them can ever expect what unfolds. Taylor establishes great character moments while also balancing the world-building of the current climate that all of the major players are living in. Readers get to see familiar faces while also experiencing new twists that will get readers talking by the end of this issue.

Aside from the suspenseful twists and turns that Tom Taylor unfolds on the reader, Trevor Hairsine’s stylistic art expertly conveys Taylor’s writing nicely. From the grim revelations to the gory terror that awaits certain heroes, Hairsine’s art, along with Rain Beredo’s colors, and Saida Temofonte’s lettering, gives the book the action horror blockbuster look that has remained consistent since the inception of this self-contained universe of books. If there is any mainstream superhero book that is self-contained with stakes that is worth picking up, it’s this series. And this issue is an example of the kind of lovely chaos that one should pick up. Especially when it’s a standalone, out-of-continuity book that doesn’t pull its punches on changing the status quo. Those are the best kinds of stories, and it’s why I recommend picking this book up for new comic book day.
