IDW comics brings you an LGBTA romance comic about an amateur witch and an amateur rock star who is between friends and enemies in Doughnuts and Doom the graphic novel.
I’ve been getting to see a lot of this lovey-dovey stuff, everywhere I go, from webcomics to graphic novels, to anime, to K-dramas and shit. But this one is just going on Love and War between the two girls. But a witch and a rock star are much more different than normal human girls. If this review ends up with the two girls going on a magical ride with a snake with that Aladdin song I’m going to go total cringe all over. The comic is created by Balazs Lorinczi, he’s a comic book author and illustrator born in Hungary and now resides in Scotland. And this is his first graphic novel that will be released on IDW comics. As much as I’d like to know everything else, everyone is going through a different journey and unlike the other artist that I’ve met, he’s more productive to post fan art on Instagram, which is more biased than what we’re doing in our lives, and perhaps this comic will be a learning experience on how did he manage to create this.
First of all, I can’t tell you that much about the front cover, because everything in this comic will be monochrome, and he chooses the coolest color in the whole comic. Cool, cold blueish. And this comic is probably an indie, because not only that he created this whole comic by himself, but I’ve seen other comics that were crafted just like that on the Forbidden Planet comic book store. And the title seems to be playful, because what you see is something that goes in balance, like flipping a coin. But “Doughnuts” I’m getting hungry.
The story starts when a witch girl named Margot goes under a witch spell test where an instructor is being an asshole about having her grow a plant into a flower by saying “the famous ‘fingers on the temple’ move” meaning that she’s trying to wake up a flower with her magic. Why not use a magic wand like one of the kids from Hooky on Webtoon, that would be simpler than using her greasy fingers. When she left the building frustrated, she picked up her stuff including her pet snake, and went off to the Doughnut shop where another girl named Elena just burned her thumb by carrying some hot baked chocolate doughnuts and dropped them because she was tired from last night at some band-practice. And then Margot comes over to order a bunch of chocolate doughnuts but then she said that she ran out. And then they started fighting over some doughnuts and being sassy. That scene almost reminded me of that story when my friend told me about some kid crying because he wanted some apple pies at Mcdonald’s, but then the cashier said that they don’t have them anymore, and the kid kept crying loudly. She got really pissed off because no chocolate doughnuts, getting her attitude, and then she broke the light bulb on the shop with her magic and left with her snake pet. That night, Elena went to some band practice with her friend, and then another asshole comes to her and said that they only had an hour to play but then she electrocuted herself with her guitar.
Now Elena’s being hospitalized, even for not getting her good night’s rest, she gets to spend her whole day in a hospital room until Margot decides to visit her while flying on a broom, Margot apologizes for that chaos at the doughnut shop yesterday. However, she admits that she cursed her for using some skull taboo on that doughnut that she ate. She literary almost tried to kill her over that. And she gives her a potion to prevent her from having more episodes, as in specified illness, but unlike her, she gets tired of work and had low blood sugar. However due to that, she’s being cursed, and Margot wanted to make up for what she did to her. So for a few days, she hung out with Elena, introduced herself to the only drummer of her band, and then helped her practice her band as a singer. And on top of that being a singer is truly magical for her, even at the end of the comic, she cured her curse by singing while performing. As I said, they have their different lives and stories as well they are struggling in their careers, and the only cure that can have is magic and the power of love.
The story is very lit, even if this is LGBTA related, but it’s all about balance. Much as everyone else, everyone is struggling with their lives. But they need someone who can listen to their problems. Margot here is struggling to pass some test in order to get a “witch spell license” or whatever it is, and Elena is a struggling rock musician whose band is going nowhere. Life seems to be tough for them, even the people around her outside of the story are jerks, which is coming from an old lady with that weakest sarcastic line at the beginning of the story and some clerk who said that some DJ is coming over. I can’t tell who’s the true enemy, the humans or themselves. The only good thing that this comic has is that Doughnuts and Doom has a meaningful story that makes enemies turn into friends and ultimately lovers. Also, there’s not much to say about the art, but again the creator has chosen to make this comic into a blueish monochrome color. I wish this comic should be drawn by Katsuhiro Otomo from Akira because there is only one scene at the doughnut shop where Elena shows that expression which relates to when Otomo illustrate the characters when they’re angry, pissed, or cringing. Other than that, the comic is great and magical, but the art is nothing special. But there’s more love to these two girls than meets the eye.
