DC Comics is releasing a group of Annuals this week, and among them is Batgirls 2022!

Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad bring forth a Freaky Friday situation, with two Batgirls waking up inside each other’s bodies! It’s a witty issue, with loads of really dramatic situations right off “the bat”. The dialogue is super smooth: we immediately get caught up in the chatter among characters and are pulled directly into the midst of a cafe renovation, a sneaky observation, kicks, and punches stirred with some wonderful narration.

The visuals (Robbi Rodriguez, with Rico Renzi on colours, Dave Sharpe on letters) are intriguing: well-crafted figures in well-fitting outfits, outfitted for laughs and tears. Rodriguez provides us with sufficient breathing room around the action scenes, tilting and gyrating faces and figures, and it’s all coloured in bright hues. Renzi’s palette is very ultra hugely vibrant, and we thank him for that, before we dip around the corner in the darkness, following Cass and Steph, and Batman too, hulking and skulking to the beat of the inner city.

A fun issue, well-played, ultimately readable. The tale continues in Batgirls #13.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
