If you are a mature reader and have admired the artwork of Guillem March (Karmen, Batman, Joker, Catwoman etc), you might want to check out Cover Girls Volume 1.

Of the two Cover Girl volumes, the first consists of, naturally, his earliest work. It’s chock full of ‘good girl’ art, from Eros Magazine and Playboy Spain, along with pages of sequential story. The drawings are superb, of course. March has a command of likeness and female anatomy. The women are slim, playful, spirited, feminine. Their power is understood; their poses, their tease, their intelligent eyes. They see what you like and they can inhabit that space in your head for a moment, a glance, a stance.

March gives us a glimpse of his work methods here also, with a generous helping of previously unpublished art. There are sketches, roughs, alternate versions.

March’s eye for colour, his ability to apply sunlight and shade, his scenes wrapped and unwrapped in shades of fantasy, that’s what I’m sayin’. Always revealing, never crass, and never overtly beyond the limits of Mature pinups and cosplayfulness.

Oh, and see my review of Cover Girls Volume 2, also posted today.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
