Guillem March’s (Karmen, Batman, Joker, Catwoman, etc) Cover Girls Volume 2 continues in the delicately placed footsteps of Volume 1.
It’s perhaps an even better collection of pinups, covers, drawings, and behind-the-scenes commentary than in Volume 1. This 170-page book is a steal at $24.99 and offers more than 200 images.
To start, there’s his run of Vampirella covers, plus a 20-page comic released here in English for the first time. And page after page of rough sketches, preliminaries, alternate versions, and spinoffs. As an artist, I appreciate the mention that some images were drawn from life drawing sessions with the models.
We all acknowledge what March is providing us here: the slim, elegant playful female of fantasy. Dressed, all dressed, and all undressed. Draped with drama and cavorting on the beach, under a palm tree. Inhabiting a science fiction world, with bizarre hair and a faraway look.
This really is a super summary of good and bad girl artwork from an active and actively-improving artist, at the top of his game.
