Action #1052 is divided into three stories: first, Superman and the Super Family is challenged by the Blue Earth Movement. Metallo is evolving and angry.

It’s tense and entertaining, this one, but a bit uneven: the S-Family sits around the living room watching TV with the kids, (story by Phillip Kennedy Johnson) but the room and comic panels get awkwardly crowded. Everyone sitting and being housebound. On the opposite end of the scale, the fight scenes (art by Rafa Sandoval, colour by Matt Herms. letters Dave Sharp) erupt in eye-splitting violence, pouring sweat and ions all over the place. But overall, very well done.

As is the second story, Home Again Part 2, written by Dan Jurgens, illustrated by Lee Weeks, colours by Elizabeth Breitweiser, Rob Leigh letters. Jon meets an alien out on the back forty, but had difficulty helping her. Trouble ensues. Purely gorgeous storytelling honed and shaved to its keenest drama.

And to wrap things up even more dramatically, Supergirl and friends break on through to the other side. There, they experience angst, anger, release, and high blood pressure, courtesy of writer Leah Williams, artist Marguerite Sauvage, and letterer Becca Carey. Sauvage renders figures in impeccable style, well-coordinated poses, and costumes, elegantly positioned, and beautifully coloured.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
