Soo Lee Talks Cheetara Stepping Out Solo!

Soo, you’re one of the hardest working people in comics! Recently we worked with you on another smash hit series, and now you’re jumping over to our biggest franchise in recent memory, in addition to all your other works. How do you manage to juggle it all and how exciting is it for this to be your next direction?

Thank you! I have an unhealthy addiction to working, I think. I love when I get my hands on a new property, especially when it’s something outside of my comfort zone because it’s an opportunity for me to grow my storytelling in both writing and art. It’s an honor to be able to tell the stories I want with these new characters and universes.

The new ThunderCats comics have been blazing up the charts, with fans hotly anticipating each new issue in the flagship series by Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss. Had you been checking in on the title yourself? And/or how has it been catching up to devise your take on one of its biggest characters in her solo breakout?

I have been reading here and there and Declan has also been a great guide to where his story is leading to, it’s been helpful to know where I want my story to go. I’ve been researching and rewatching some of the original episodes as well. I’ll also say, the fandom wiki pages are pretty awesome. Thanks guys!

Lion-O gets to be the leader of course, and every ThunderCats fan has their favorites among the cast. What do you think makes Cheetara so special? And what makes her the perfect choice to kick off the first companion series in this line?

There are some very cool things about Cheetara that have been overlooked in the original cartoon, that I really want to make the center of her story. She’s also iconic and very strong, it makes sense she gets her own series. It’s a look into the most important supporting character.

How much has chronology and ties to the core series been a factor in developing and writing this one? Editor Nate Cosby runs a tight ship, while working with so many brilliant creators to bring their style and visions to stories.

This is completely different! It’s a whole separate new story and a completely reimagined one. There are some little easter eggs that may be tied into the future, so keep an eye out!

You’ve been really expanding your craft and diverse contributions across projects. Many fans may know you a bit better over time as an artist. With that background in mind, do you think you approach writing for other artists differently? How has it been working with Domenico Carbone so far and how are you liking the style that he brings to Cheetara on the page from your scripts?

I love Domenico’s Cheetara designs. She looks strong and beautiful and not sexualized. I think it’s loyal to the vibes of the Cheetara we know in the original series.

Writing a script for another artist is a bit more difficult, because I have to be more precise in panel descriptions and story direction. If it was for myself, I could be as vague or even just have two or three words to describe a panel. Basically more like footnotes on what the page should look like! But I can’t expect Domenico to be a mind reader so I need to give just enough direction without suffocating and letting him take the reins on how they envision the page versus my own.
