The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films today announced the Special Achievement Honorees for the 53rd Annual Saturn Awards, taking place Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles, hosted by Joel McHale. The Academy also unveiled its newly launched official website, SaturnAwards.TV, which will livestream the ceremony worldwide.
This year’s special honors include the presentation of the Visionary Award to producer, director, and Academy Award®-winning writer Christopher McQuarrie, presented by Tom Cruise; the George Pal Memorial Award presented to ALIENS in celebration of its 40th Anniversary, with director James Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd accepting; the Saturn Hall of Fame Award presented to STAR TREK; and the Lance Reddick Legacy Award presented to Titus Welliver.
These special honorees are part of the annual Saturn Awards ceremony, which celebrates the year’s biggest and best achievements in science fiction, fantasy, horror, superhero, and action-adventure storytelling across film and television. Founded in 1972, the Saturn Awards remain the only awards program dedicated exclusively to recognizing genre entertainment.
More specifics about the Special Awards announced today:
GEORGE PAL MEMORIAL AWARD
40th Anniversary Tribute to ALIENS
The Saturn Awards proudly turns the spotlight to director James Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd, who will accept the George Pal Memorial Award honoring the 40th Anniversary of ALIENS. A towering milestone in genre cinema, ALIENS is the rare sequel that became its own mythology – an emotionally charged, technically groundbreaking, audience-thrilling film that redefined science-fiction action, expanded the Alien universe, and continues to inspire filmmakers and fans across generations.
Director Guillermo Del Toro will present the award to the creative team with cast members including Carrie Henn, Michael Biehn, Ricco Ross, Jenette Goldstein, Mark Rolston, and Cynthia Scott in attendance to join the tribute. Matt Winston will attend and accept on behalf of his father, Academy Award-winning Stan Winston, the film’s Special Effects Makeup Creator and Creature Effects Supervisor, whose groundbreaking work remains central to the film’s enduring legacy.
Named for visionary producer George Pal, whose classic science-fiction achievements such as The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine helped define cinematic spectacle, the George Pal Memorial Award is presented to individuals or films that reflect exemplary genre filmmaking. Following last year’s 40th anniversary tribute to Back to the Future, this honor continues the Academy’s tradition of recognizing milestone achievements in genre history.
SATURN HALL OF FAME AWARD
STAR TREK on its 60th Anniversary
The Saturn Hall of Fame Award is formally reinstated this year to honor one of the most influential and enduring franchises in genre history: STAR TREK, celebrating its 60th anniversary.
From the optimism of The Original Series to its profound influence on technology, philosophy, and global pop culture, Gene Roddenberry’s creation remains one of entertainment’s most enduring, future-forward gifts. STAR TREK has inspired generations of storytellers, scientists, and dreamers, and continues to shape the cultural imagination six decades after its debut, reflected in its latest iteration, STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY.
William Shatner, Alex Kurtzman, and Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry are confirmed to participate in the celebration.
First presented in 1978 to Ray Harryhausen and last awarded in 1980 to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Saturn Hall of Fame Award returns this landmark year to recognize franchises whose legacy extends far beyond the screen and into the cultural fabric of generations.
VISIONARY AWARD
Christopher McQuarrie
Presented by Tom Cruise
Producer, director, and Academy Award®-winning writer Christopher McQuarrie will receive the Visionary Award, presented by Tom Cruise.
From his Oscar-winning breakthrough The Usual Suspects to the sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow and his collaborations with Cruise on the Mission: Impossible franchise, McQuarrie’s work reflects a relentless devotion to craft, clarity, and theatrical-scale storytelling.
The Visionary Award recognizes filmmakers whose work expands the language of cinema. Previous recipients include Christopher Nolan and other artists whose vision reshapes the possibilities of large-scale storytelling.
THE LANCE REDDICK LEGACY AWARD
Titus Welliver
Titus Welliver will receive the Lance Reddick Legacy Award. Welliver, who starred alongside Reddick in Bosch and was a close friend, also helped establish this honor at the 51st Saturn Awards by presenting the inaugural Lance Reddick Legacy Award to Keanu Reeves, making this recognition especially meaningful and full circle.
Created to honor the late Lance Reddick’s extraordinary spirit – talent matched by character – this award celebrates performers who serve as true goodwill ambassadors in the industry.
Academy President Robert Holguin and Saturn producers Bradley and Kevin Marcus comment, “These honors celebrate the heart of what the Saturn Awards have always stood for. From legendary franchises that shaped our imaginations to filmmakers and performers who continue to raise the bar, this year’s Special Achievement recipients represent the passion, innovation, and staying power of genre storytelling. It is an extraordinary year to be a genre fan.”
Additional special honors and participating talent will be announced soon.
