STARLOG RETURNS TO PRINT WITH A NEW SCIENCE-FORWARD VISION

Celebrating 50 years, the iconic science fiction and fantasy publication returns to newsstands November 13 with an all-new annual magazine led by Editor-in-Chief Annalee Newitz.

STARLOG, the magazine that helped define

science fiction and fantasy journalism for more than three decades, is officially returning to print. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the all-new annual STARLOG magazine will hit newsstands nationwide November 13, 2026, carrying the publication’s legacy into a new era of science, technology, and speculative storytelling.

At the helm is science journalist and sci-fi author Annalee Newitz, former founding editor of io9, who serves as Editor-in-Chief.

Originally launched in 1976 as a pioneering magazine devoted to science fiction and fantasy entertainment, the revived STARLOG expands that mission for a new era, exploring the intersection of visionary storytelling, cutting-edge technology, groundbreaking science, and the future worlds taking shape around us.

“Science fiction and fantasy give us a sandbox to reimagine our world, and STARLOG is your invitation to play along,” said Newitz. “We’re honoring the fannish legacy of the original magazine and bringing it into the future with hopeful, awe-inspiring, and scientifically grounded explorations of where humanity could go next.”

“During its original 33-year run, STARLOG documented science fiction as it evolved across film, television, books, technology, and culture,” said Tara Ansley, co-owner of STARLOG. “Fifty years after the magazine first launched, the line between science fiction and the real world has become increasingly difficult to separate. That makes this an especially interesting time to bring STARLOG back. Technology may change, but the most compelling questions have always been about people: how we live, what we create, and what kind of future we want to build.”

Featuring cover art by Gabriel Yeganyan (Star Wars, Highguard), the new 100-page issue includes:

  • Franchise Favorites: A 60th-anniversary deep dive into the art and science of Star Trek, analyses of Dune and The Lord of the Rings, and a look back at how STARLOG covered the original Star Wars trilogy.
  • Science & Speculation: Real-world reporting on soft robotics, orbital space farming, and what Hollywood still gets wrong (and right) about laser technology.
  • Behind the Screens: From a look at the worldbuilding of Dungeons and Dragons to the practical construction of pop culture’s most famous starships.

Across 374 issues and more than 25,000 pages, the original STARLOG documented the evolution of science fiction and fantasy entertainment and the actors, writers, directors, artists, craftspeople, and technological breakthroughs that shaped it. The publication became both a guide to the genre and a record of its transformation into a defining force in popular culture.

The new magazine is part of a broader revival of the STARLOG brand, which began earlier this year with the launch of The STARLOG Podcast, hosted by Jordan Hoffman and Dave Gonzales, and The Lodestar, a weekly newsletter written by Hoffman. The expanded creative team also includes Phil Nobile Jr. as SVP of Editorial, Meredith Borders as Senior Editor, and Jason Kauzlarich as Senior Art Director.

Together, STARLOG’s print magazine, podcast, and newsletter reflect a renewed mission: to celebrate the stories that imagine the future while exploring the real science, technology, and people already building it.

The all-new STARLOG magazine arrives on newsstands November 13, 2026.
