MoCCA Art Fest proves once again that comic book are not just about heroes in spandex.
The MoCCA Art Fest is definitely one of the more eclectic comic conventions out there. MoCCA Fest is created by the Society of Illustration, and it truly celebrates comic art.
I just love seeing all the independent books there. Just so much hidden talent in this space. Books ranged from children’s stories, mysteries, and unique creations. There were 2 floors just filled with all this comic goodness.
Guest of Honor included Mike Mignola, Roz Chast, Nate Powell, and Andrew Aydin. Unlike more mainstream comic conventions, the guests were extremely accessible and just happy to be there. I personally was able to have a conversation with Nate Powell and how my wife is using his book March in her classroom. Really cool!
Upstairs had a gallery section where you could check out examples of the Guest of Honor work. Plus there was a section where budding artists were drawing a picture of a model who was dressed as Hellboy. It was neat to watch!
There were also panels discussing different topics like Comics, Community and Career and Political Cartooning: Now, More Than Ever. So not the standard.
Even though the place was packed, there was still ample room to move around it.
The Society of Illustrators did an amazing job on MoCCA Art Fest. The only downside is that this is a once a year event. But I’m already counting down the days until next year!
