Petals, an original story in silent comic book form, comes along this month from BOOM.

Written and illustrated by Gustavo Borges and coloured by Cris Peter, Petals is a touching story of a bird and a fox. As unlikely as it would seem, bird and fox form a symbiotic relationship during a tough winter. Each helps the other. To say much more would reveal too much of the story…

The unusual aspect of this tale is that it is done without dialogue. It’s a totally ‘wordless’ book. Only gestures, pantomime, and sound effects.

The colour palette is a cold colour. It’s winter! Best to be indoors, away from the wind and snow, where there is a fire!
The drawings are expressive, but not overly expressive. It’s simply about characters in the woods during winter. Their actions. Their reactions.

The reader will catch himself poring over the panels, trying to see where the story is going. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith; just like with a bird and a fox!

Bonus pages feature a chat with the artist and the colourist.

BOOM Comics, Petals, $16.99 for 51 pages of content. Rating not given, but assume all ages.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
