Batgirl #50 from DC Comics gives us more pages, and more thought. It’s a thoughtful Barbara this time, in this last and final issue of the 2016 Batgirl title.
Cecil Castellucci writes “Little Wonders”, with Batgirl burying her brother James Gordon Jr.
The moments in “Little Wonders” serve as a pivot point, a turning point for Barbara. She’s reflecting on her job position, her relationships. The colours are reflective, that is, reflective of autumn, reds, and oranges. The panels are small, the ramifications big. Big decisions to be made, long conversations, and a period of reexamination. Emanuela Lupacchino pencils, Wade Von Grawbadger, Mick Gray, and Scott Hanna ink, with Jordie Bellaire on colour.
The second story, “Stay Centred”, also written by Castellucci, is illustrated and coloured by French/Canadian artist Marguerite Sauvage. Sauvage’s elegant posing of characters and her ability to squeeze a story into a small space make her a great choice for this one. Batgirl is battling an anarchist who is planting viruses of destruction!
Finally, “Game Night” rounds off this ‘goodbye girl’ issue, with Castellucci writing, and Aneke on art. Trish Mulvihill colours, as the ladies deal with the dangers of gaming, on the board, and off the rails.
All in all, a fitting final issue for Batgirl fans, well worth picking up!
