Batgirls #8, flirty and full of fists.
It starts with Babs, on a date with Dick Grayson, at the taboo Iceberg Lounge. The place where the bad guys dine but don’t dash. The onstage attraction is a nefarious Quebec sword swallower named Lulu. Well, there is more happening than cocktails for two, of course. And the Batgirls are there for a little break and enter, to rescue Seer. And then things go smoothly until they don’t, which is where the fun starts for the reader.
Writers Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad give us voice-over commentary, dialogue, and captions to keep us squared away. There is a playlist of characters, chaos every which way, and tons of punching and kicking. There is a fondness for showing people getting punched in the face, over and over.
The art by Robbi Rodriguez with colour by Rico Renzi hits the right notes: attention paid to glamour, gowns, and girls, with loads of atmosphere, angled takes on physical fight moves, and non-traditional approaches on how to colour scenes when there is no apparent source of light. Just make it up, make it fun and entertaining.
This one busts a move, busts a gut, and gets the bad guys all in a row, fun for all involved.
