In May TASCHEN will publish Hal Foster’s Tarzan. The Complete Sunday Comics 1931-1937, documenting Hal Foster’s 60-episode daily newspaper strip Tarzan of the Apes – the first adventure comic.

Originally illustrated in 1929, the strip was followed from 1931 to 1937 by 292 full-page Tarzan Sunday comics. This volume reprints every comic from the original newspapers, in a colourful XXL format, preserving the colour and texture of the Ben Day dot colouring process distinctive to vintage comics.

From encounters with ancient Egyptians, modern criminals, Vikings, dinosaurs, killer apes, and a slew of provocative queens and princesses, Foster’s Tarzan became one of the most beloved Sunday strips in America and defined adventure comics for decades to come. Though newspapers objected to its violence and ‘gory and gruesome situations,’ readers returned week after week for its cinematic storytelling and immersive world of exotic adventure.
