Rubin recently appeared at Earth-2 Comics in Sherman Oaks, California, then made his first stop on the East Coast at New York City’s Books of Wonder.
BOLIVAR has earned critical acclaim from all corners, receiving rave reviews from Publishers Weekly (“Debut author-illustrator Rubin spins a delightful tale…” – Starred Review) and Library Journal (“Dino-mite stuff.”), placement on the New York Public Library’s Best Books for Kids List for 2017, and being named a Junior Library Guild Selection. Now with a third printing on the way after less than a month on-sale, BOLIVAR is a smash hit.
“BOLIVAR is the result of Sean Rubin’s singular passion over the years to create a graphic novel about the importance of being seen and heard,” commented Filip Sablik, President of Publishing and Marketing, BOOM! Studios. “This is a breathtaking debut from an important new creative voice, one that we’re pleased is resonating so strongly worldwide and resulting in a third printing less than a month after its release!”
BOLIVAR is the story of a dinosaur who lives in New York City because he doesn’t want to be noticed. But one of his neighbors, a young girl named Sybil, is wise to him and desperately tries to tell her mom and anyone who would listen that there’s a dinosaur who lives next door. Broken down into five chapters (each roughly the length of a traditional picture book—perfect for five nights of bedtime reading for younger children), BOLIVAR is not a typical OGN.
“BOLIVAR borrows heavily from picture books, graphic novels, and comic strips to create something new and unique,” said Rubin. “While BOLIVAR is intended for all ages, because it doesn’t fit into traditional categories, I’m hoping it will help to expand how people think about illustrated books and comics, especially for middle-grade readers.”
Print copies of BOLIVAR are available now at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one); booksellers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Books-A-Million; or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers like comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.
