Movie Review: X-Men: Days Of Future Past (20th Century Fox)

xmen dofp

In 2000, 20th Century Fox and director Bryan Singer brought one of comics most popular teams to the big screen. X-Men was a hit. So much so, that it warranted an even better sequel. The films made actor Hugh Jackman a household name. And set the standard for comic book films.

And then everything fell apart.

Singer decided to leave the franchise and direct Superman Returns (which bombed). The third X-Men film was placed in director Brett Ratner hands. At the time, Ratner was only known for those God awful Rush Hour films. So Ratner took the X-Men franchise, and drove it into the ground. Leaving a bad taste in fans’ mouths.

But the pain didn’t stop there. The producers decided to do a Wolverine solo film, which at the time made sense. The problem was, it just plain sucked.

Thankfully director Matthew Vaughn took up the reigns and did X-Men: First Class. The film dealt with events that happened years before the first X-Men film. But as wonderful of a film it was, it’s continuity didn’t match up to the previous three X-Men films. It made fans confused about the entire timeline. And even more fans wanted the X-Men film rights returned Marvel Studios. So when Fox announced a new X-Men film with Bryan Singer at the helm again, fans weren’t just upset. They were pretty much rioting on the net. They didn’t have doubts. They had hatred.

Well, let me be one of the first people to say they fixed it!!!

In the new film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, it is very loosely based on the story line of the same name that ran in Uncanny X-Men #141-142.

In the future, mutants are either put in camps or killed by these giant robots called Sentinels. But the Sentinels became self-aware and rebelled against humanity. I know some of you are reading this and thinking it’s a rip off Terminator, but the the comic story pre-dates the film by 3 years. So who copied who?

Anyhow, to change their future, the X-Men have to send someone into the past to change events from ever happening that lead to this dystopian future. But instead of sending a person back, they can only send back their mind to their younger self. And the only one that can handle this stress is Wolverine. His mission is to help Charles Xavier form the X-Men, and to stop the event that changes everything.

Look, like the rest of you, I was questioning things. How would they ever put this mess back together again? With Bryan Singer directing again, and Matthew Vaughn working on the script, they did a pretty decent job.

I’m not going to lie and say it’s perfect and everything is fixed, but most of the stuff is, and now the franchise can move on. It does bridge the gap between First Class and the first X-Men film. Best of all, this film pretty much wipes X-Men: The Last Stand out of existence. Hee hee!

Most of the cast returned to the roles they’ve made famous, and they do a great job here. But, in case you haven’t already heard, the one who really steals the show is Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters. His big scene is not only action packed, but it’s freaking hilarious.

There are a lot of characters in this film, and the balancing of all of them isn’t that easy. Most of them only appear on screen for a short time. But while they are on screen, they are used extremely well.

One of the minor things about this film that did bug me was there was no Stan Lee cameo. But, just watch very carefully the Senate committee scene. You might just recognize at least two familiar faces.

Seriously, I ended up loving this film more than I thought I would. And it brought back hope to the franchise. I’m seriously looking forward to the next film. If it continues from the point X-Men: Days Of Future Past ended, I’ll be a very happy camper.

This is a film you need to see on the big screen, but, and a very big BUT, do not waste your money on 3D or Imax. Don’t believe the hype because neither added anything to the film. This film wasn’t shot in 3D or Imax, so there’s not point to dish out extra to see it like that.

And as always, stay through the credits. There is a scene at the end.

In closing, if you’re finished reading this review and still think this film won’t be any good until Marvel Studios has the rights again, then you’re an idiot who should not be allowed to have an opinion.

Go see it. It’s awesome.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens everywhere on Friday, May 23.

Home Entertainment Review: JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time (Warner)

1000400149DVDLEFOWhat if there never Superman never existed? Would the Justice League still be around? And how would it affect future generations of heroes?

Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom, does get the chance to wipe Superman and the JLA from the current timeline. But due to a rift in time, two potential members of the Legion of Super-Heroes, the prominent team of heroes of the 30th century, have to go back in time and set things right. All hope lies in the hands of Karate Kid and Dawnstar. But are these two novice heroes up for the challenge that awaits them.

JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time is definitely a homage to the old Challenge of the Super Friends cartoon. Justice League consists of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Robin, Aquaman, Flash, & Cyborg. While the Legion of Doom consists of Luthor, Bizzaro, Cheetah, Solomon Grundy, Gorilla Good, Black Manta, Captain Cold, and Toyman.

If you are used to the other DC Comics animated features like Justice League: War and Son of Batman, and expect that quality you get there, you’re going to be disappointed. But that’s OK, because YOU are not the target audience here.

Yes, the animation is high quality you might not be used to, but don’t sweat it. This is a family film, that is also a great throwback to Super Friends cartoon. It’s a fun film. Don’t try to over analyze it. Just sit back and enjoy it. It’s a fun film that doesn’t take itself seriously. Personally I think it’s a great way to introduce them the Justice League, and to a lesser extent, the Legion of Super Heroes.

Not every DC animated feature needs to be serious and dark. Have some fun.

The DVD also includes 2 extra features. Both episode from the Super Friends cartoon:

  • The All – New Super Friends Hour: The Mysterious Time Creatures
  • Super Friends: Elevator to Nowhere

JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time was originally only a Target exclusive. But is now available where ever you buy DVD.

IDW ENTERTAINMENT AND ENTERTAINMENT ONE TELEVISION TO DEVELOP V-WARS AS A SERIES

Tim Schlattmann To Write The Pilot

vwars

IDW Entertainment and Entertainment One Television (eOne Television) announced today that V-Wars will be the first series project developed under the recently announced first-look co-production agreement.

Three-time Emmy® Award nominee Tim Schlattmann (Dexter, Smallville) has been tapped to write the pilot, and will serve as an executive producer on the series. Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment, John Morayniss and Benedict Carver from eOne Television, and David Alpert and Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion (The Walking Dead) will also executive produce.

V-Wars is being developed as direct-to-series and is based on the acclaimed IDW Publishing property written by New York Times best-selling and multiple Bram Stoker Award®-winning author Jonathan Maberry.

“This is a story that takes everything the audience thinks they know about vampires and throws it out the window. They’re not the undead. They’re us.” said Schlattman.

V-Wars is set in a world transformed by a catastrophic environmental event that releases a millennial-old virus that once triggered, affects individuals differently depending on their DNA. The result is vampires as unique as their cultures and a response from those unaffected humans like never seen before.

“V-Wars is a head-on collision of real-world science, terrorism, special forces action, ethics, politics and an exploration of what defines us as human,” said Maberry.

“Tim brings an incredible vision for V-Wars,” said Ozer, IDW Entertainment President, “The series sets an exciting tone for our first project launched with Entertainment One and will resonate throughout the global television market.”

“V-Wars is the perfect project to kick off our partnership with IDW Entertainment, and lays the groundwork for a slate of ambitious projects to come,” said Morayniss, Chief Executive Officer, eOne Television. “We are thrilled to have attracted such a huge talent as Tim to bring this gritty post-apocalyptic world to life.”

V-Wars debuted as a collection of prose stories that chronicles the first Vampire War, and a second volume is scheduled for release this July. IDW Publishing also launched an ongoing monthly V-Wars comic book series in May. The first issue was critically acclaimed and is already headed to a second printing.

A DEADLY WOMAN RETURNS TO THE FIELD IN VELVET

Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting put a dark new twist on the spy genre

velvet 01

VELVET is the graphic novel that results when Ed Brubaker (FATALE) and Steve Epting, the creative team behind the movie-inspiring smash-hit Captain America: The Winter Soldier, create a comic for themselves — with an original character like few others found on the comics stands. The first volume, VELVET: BEFORE THE LIVING END will be in stores this summer.

In 1973, Velvet Templeton is the executive assistant to the head of a spy agency. She is meticulous, professional, and ultra-competent. But few people know that she’s also the deadliest woman on Earth. Velvet gave up fieldwork years ago, but now she’s drawn back into the action when one of the agency’s top operatives is killed and the evidence points to her as the killer.

“There’s this archetypal secretary who’s in a lot of spy movies and novels — the Moneypenny type. It goes through pulp fiction, this Girl Friday idea, and I thought, ‘What if that character was also a Modesty Blaise or Black Widow type? What if that was her secret past?’” said writer Brubaker, who has signed an exclusive deal with Image Comics with artist Sean Phillips, in an interview with USA Today. “It’s touching on a lot of the stuff I love about the spy genre that’s been in comics, but it’s never been in comics that much in America.”

A sexy, subversive action thriller with dark, painterly art by Epting and colors by Elizabeth Breitweiser that is inspired by vintage spy novel cover art, VELVET VOLUME 1: BEFORE THE LIVING END will be in comic book stores on June 18 and bookstores on July 1, and is specially priced at $9.99.
