WHO YA GONNA CALL?…DOMO!

wpid-wp-1400698580870.jpegICONS COLLIDE IN COLOSSAL POP-CULTURE MASH-UP PAIRING DOMO WITH GHOSTBUSTER FRANCHISE IN NEW CONSUMER PRODUCTS LINE

The Internet and social media meme that has become a mascot for the millennial generation – Domo – is crossing streams with one of the most iconic film franchises of the past 30 years – Ghostbusters – in a new consumer products line that will put a smile on the face of pop-culture fans everywhere. This supernatural entertainment mash-up takes a fresh approach to the Ghostbusters franchise blending both classic and new with cross generational appeal casting Domo in a line of collectibles and plush for a limited time only. The line, made possible through an agreement with Sony Pictures Consumer Products as brokered by Big Tent Entertainment, is slated to hit shelves in fall 2014.

The line will concentrate on those eccentric characters from the franchise, namely Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, best suited to stand alongside the enigmatic furry brown Domo, and will cast them in instantly recognizable scenes from the film.

“Ghostbusters is one of the most influential and instantly recognizable pop-culture icons of all-time,” said Rich Collins, President and CEO, Big Tent Entertainment. “This mash-up bridges the generation gap between pop-culture fandom and blends two franchises that seem to share a common sensibility.”

“The collaboration between beloved, iconic movie franchise, The Ghostbusters, and millennial fan favorite, Domo, will provide a highly sought after product launch appealing to consumers of all ages”, said Gregory Economos, SVP Global Consumer Products, Sony Pictures Entertainment.

In Ghostbusters, University parapsychologists Dr. Peter Venkman (Murray), Dr. Raymond Stanz (Aykroyd) and Dr. Egon Spengler (Ramis) lose a research grant when their experiment methodology is proven to be bogus. The team decides to go into business for themselves and open ‘Ghostbusters,’ a ghost removal service. After struggling to get on their feet, they are summoned to investigate the strange happenings in Dana Barrett’s (Weaver) Central Park West apartment. What they discover is that all Manhattan is being besieged by ghosts and other worldly demons through a portal in her building.

Domo’s unique look and personality as the mascot for Japanese public broadcaster NHK quickly catapulted the character into one of the Internet’s biggest sensations. As the reigning poster child for personalized, user-generated content, Domo has found a home as a pop culture icon with over 6 million Facebook fans and hundreds of thousands of fan-made images, websites and videos posted to websites such as YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest and Flickr, among others. Now more than a decade later, the lovable fuzzy brown character’s cult status continues to grow with product flying off retail shelves.

Comic Review: Saga #19 (Image Comics)

Photo May 18, 8 37 10 AMI admit here and now, I didn’t get on the Saga bandwagon initially. For a long time, even.  Because, I had a feeling it was just that…a bandwagon thing.  When the internets get all hot and bothered about a book, I tend to ignore it.  It’s just how I am.

But, that’s not to say I didn’t try it.  I bought the first trade shortly after it was released.  I didn’t get far, though.  I just couldn’t get into it.

It’s just how I am.

After months of relentless bothering from friends and the internets alike, I picked the first trade up again, and forced my way through it.  And I admit here and now (again), this time I liked it.  So much so I tracked down the old issues and got myself caught up.

What can I say?  It’s just how I am.

But, enough about me (and how I am).  We’re here to talk about issue 19.  So…is it me or does it seem like Saga is in some sort of lull or having some growing pains as of late?

Whoa!  Now hang on!  Before you start looking for rocks to stone me with, let me just say that there isn’t anything wrong with the book, per se.  There’s still a story going on.  It just feels like, there’s a little loss of direction going on.  Or at least a lull for the last few issues.  Between whatever’s going on with Prince Robot IV, The Will, the tabloid journalist Upsher and Doff…not to mention out two lovebirds, Alana and Marko…there are so many plot points open right now, it feels like were adrift on that tree rocket ship with that crazy post-modern family.  Like I said, it could just be me.Photo May 18, 8 39 52 AM

Anyway…one of the things Saga does well is push boundaries.  And issue 19 is no exception, right from the opening page.  Which, I am not posting here because this is a family friendly show.  We learn a little bit more about the Robots and their history (which your friendly neighborhood jman finds probably the most interesting about Saga).  And we get more of a glimpse of the struggles of day to day life that new parents have to face.  If they were on the run from the law.  And lived in a tree rocketship.

As always Fiona Staples’ art is…wow.  I’m telling you. She is awesome.  But, you don’t need me to tell you that.  You read Saga, too.

Look…don’t get me wrong.  It’s not a bad issue.  I’m just hoping Brain Vaughn picks a plot point and sees it though.  And wraps up a couple other ones, too.

Saga #19 is on sale now.

“KING KIRBY” Kickstarter Launches to Bring Artist’s Story to Life on Stage

kirby_newKing Kirby, a play by the husband-and-wife team of NYIT-award winning playwright Crystal Skillman and New York Times bestselling comics writer Fred Van Lente about the life of legendary artist Jack Kirby, is set to premiere at the 2014 Comic Book Theater Festival in New York City — and the funds will be raised via a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign that ends the moment the show hits the stage at 7pm EST, June 20.

The show’s official description reads:

King Kirby tells the hysterical and heartbreaking story of artist Jack Kirby, “The King of the Comics,” who created or co-created some of your favorite heroes on the page and screen, Captain America, the Avengers, Thor, Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Iron Man, Young Romance the New Gods, Darkseid, The Demon… the list goes on and on.

From the Jewish ghetto of New York’s Lower East Side to the battlefields of France to the Senate hearings of 1950s, King Kirby is a hysterical and heartbreaking story about a man who pours his quintessentially Twentieth Century life into his comics, only to make the fateful mistake that sends him into obscurity while his creations become known to every person on Earth.

A real-life “Adventures of Kavalier & Klay”, King Kirby asks what happens when an artist doesn’t own his own legacy? Can he ever get it back?

The show is set to premiere at this year’s 2014 Comic Book Theater Festival, starring Steven Rattazzi as Kirby, perhaps best known to comics fans as the voice of Dr. Orpheus from Cartoon Network’s The Venture Bros, and he’s joined by Amy Lee Pearsall, Joe Mathers, Nat Cassidy and Timothy McCown Reynolds. The director is John Hurley, who brought Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey’s Action Philosophers comics to the stage for the first Comic Book Theater Festival.

“King Kirby has been a long-term passion project of mine,” said Van Lente. “With Crystal’s help, it’s down on paper. Now, with your help, we’ll bring this crucial piece of comics history to life on stage.”

King Kirby Kickstarter awards include a 60-page exclusive Evil Twin Comics Jack Kirby Comic Book Comic from their Comic Book History of Comics GN, a handsome book containing the script and production skills, an audio recording of the play, signed playbills, and a signed Simon & Kirby print created by Ryan Dunlavey for the show, signed by the artist.

Darkness Takes Flight in WHISPERS in June

whispersSupernatural thriller graphic novel by
Joshua Luna from Image in June

In WHISPERS, a chilling graphic novel by Joshua Luna (ULTRA, GIRLS, THE SWORD) due out in June, Sam is a young man struggling with anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder when he suddenly gains the ability to leave his body in “ghost” form and travel, free from his body, unseen.

As he travels, Sam finds he can manipulate people, nudging them to perform acts, as well as hear their thoughts. Unable to control this power, Sam’s actions lead to uncontrollable consequences, and soon he finds himself witnessing horrific acts. Can he right what has gone wrong in his life? Or will he lose himself in a shadow world of demonic forces?

“We are so accustomed to the filter that exists between a person’s true thoughts and feelings and what they actually express out loud that we often don’t know what it’s like to get the raw truth,” said Luna, who both wrote and drew WHISPERS. “But what if someone could override that filter? What if someone could peek into your mind and know your deepest fears and desires and use that knowledge to influence or even manipulate you? Whispers is about the headspace that we all try to protect from the outside world and how the awareness of its vulnerability can lead to empowerment or destruction.”

WHISPERS is an intense supernatural thriller, sure to captivate fans of television shows like the BBC’s and Syfy’s Being Human and dark fiction like Joe Hart’s The Waiting. It will be in comic book stores on June 11 and in bookstores on June 24.

DISPLACED PERSONS inspired by City-by-the-Bay

displaced personsAn original graphic novel inspired by
San Francisco’s eclectic populace

From the Eisner-nominated writer Derek McCulloch (STAGGER LEE, Gone to Amerikay) and artist Anthony Peruzzo comes DISPLACED PERSONS, a riveting tale of murder, love, crime, friendship, betrayal, and just the slightest bit of time travel.

San Francisco, the twentieth century: In 1939, a private detective searches for a missing heiress. In 1969, twin brothers approach a drug heist from opposite sides of the law. And in 1999, a woman slowly comes to realize the terrible danger she faces in her own home.

McCulloch was inspired to write DISPLACED PERSONS because of a love of puzzle stories, detective stories, time travel stories, and a fascination with how history imprints itself on the smaller story of a family’s history. “It’s like reading rings in a tree… you can see the growth of the tree, ring by ring, and the distance between the rings tells you when the droughts hit, or the long winters, or the hurricanes,” explained McCulloch.

“You can look at a family tree the same way, and when you see that someone was born, say, in Poland in 1920, and their child was born in Baltimore in 1947, there’s a story between those two rings. Displaced Persons takes those rings, and takes all the different kinds of stories I love, and mixes them up and twists them into a shape you won’t really understand until the last page. It’s a book I hope people will read twice… I guarantee you’ll see things the second time you didn’t know were there the first time.”

DISPLACED PERSONS OGN is in an original graphic novel format and arrives in stores on 8/6 for $17.99. It is available to pre-order with Diamond Code JUN140499.
