With Inside Moebius, Part 1, Dark Horse embarks on the first in a six-volume collection of the later works of the French comic artist.

Inside Moebius is not strictly a collection of his past comic work, though. It’s a tour-de-force original work, translated into English from various printed sources, based on a new semi-autobiographical adventure story. Confused?

How shall I describe Inside Moebius? How about: the musings of a 60-something established French comic legend, in the midst of quitting smoking pot and feeling himself in uncertain health. Moebius invents a desert environment, where he draws himself examining his life and career.

By turns amusing and awe-inspiring, this series of volumes is starting off in the most thought-provoking manner; Moebius draws himself locking himself in an ‘ego-bunker’ in the middle of his ‘Desert-B’, where he tries to draw new work. Or meets Osama bin Laden, fresh from the attack on the New York City Twin Towers. Or is able to fly, and experiences true freedom and joy! Or has philosophical discussions with his younger self, or with characters from his previous books.

Drawn in a sketchier, looser style than his typical work, Inside Moebius is a fascinating, frank semi-retrospective of the works of this late artist. If you ARE a fan of his work, pick up this Volume, and stay tuned for the rest of the series!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
