A new title from BOOM!, Low Road West, brings us on the rocky road of immigrant troubles.

The first issue of this five-issue miniseries sets the scene for us: Washington DC is relocating refugee children via school bus. As one bus travels west into New Mexico, its driver bails, leaving the kids stranded. It’s sink or swim, or at least it would be if they weren’t stuck in a desert without water.

There is disagreement among the kids as they plot a course away from the abandoned bus. It seems there are a lot of abandoned vehicles along this stretch of road. And, to no one’s surprise, there are predators around. And dead animals. Wait, they ARE dead, aren’t they??

This is a very readable start for a mini-series. Writer Philiip Kennedy Johnson applies the story hooks that will get us involved with these kids. And knows precisely how to continually ratchet up the suspense. The art by Flaviano and colouring by Miquel Muerto really suit the story too. The kids are real enough in appearance, but slightly ‘cartoony’ real. The colouring is carefully applied, without killing the line art.

Nice book and a great start!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
