With what must be one of the longest titles of the year, Wonder Woman Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour #1 from DC hits the pre-Halloween sweet spot.

This issue has it all: a huge cast, a backstory of Wonder Woman’s youth, a mystical magic connection, and plenty of dark drama,

The cover is electrifying, literally, with a possessed Wonder Woman surrounded by fire and lightning. Oh, wow, so much brightness for such a dark tale! Perhaps your taste lies in the variant cover by Riccardo Federici, with a verrry dark WW, surrounded by swirling black smoke and creepy plants, clearly demonstrates a demonic side! Purely wonderful!

This intro into a continuing saga is written by James Tynion IV, and illustrated by Jesus Merino with colouring by Romulo Fajardo Jr. There are plenty of double-page spreads throughout, giving the book a somewhat ‘epic’ sweeping feel. The art is detailed and well crafted. The pacing is excellent. and the colouring is superb.

I found the dialogue a bit wordy as if it were a stage play. Dramatic oratorio, perhaps. But otherwise, a good read, plenty of conflict and drama, and a tour-de-force in including sooo many story points and characters, yet keeping all the balls in the air. Standing ovation!!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
