Well, we’re almost at the end of the trail for Ascender, from Image Comics. This week, we see issue 4 of 5.

This title, written by Jeff Lemire, and illustrated by Dustin Nguyen, has been top-notch up til now, and the story continues to be interesting. For those of you joining in for the first time, here’s the briefest of summaries: Vampire Witch “Mother” is inside her floating castle on the planet Mata. She’s just learned that a force is arising to free the oppressed, so she’s investigating. Meanwhile, Mila, on the planet Sampson, is on the run. With her dad. There, you have it.

I read the issue in less than 5 minutes, but your mileage may vary. It’s a very quick read. Great story, incredible watercolour style graphics, and lots of drama. Not much dialogue this time around. Big panels, splash pages galore, small words. Fly through it and yer done, ready for the final issue.

Image, Ascender #4, $3.99 for 26 pages of content. Mature rating.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
