In a special issue, DC’s Nubia character is coronated, and there is joy in the universe!

The issue commemorates and celebrates Queen Nubia, champion of three tribes. And fitting for a queen, two writers (Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala) and several artists have made themselves available to pay tribute in this $5.99 comic.

With Marguerite Sauvage’s elegantly posed figures and sumptuous coloured pages acting as a framing device, we delve into the past, present, and future of Nubia. It’s like a Powerpoint deck, in that sense: where we’ve been, where we are now, and what’s to come…

Marguerite Sauvage joins artists Colleen Doran, Darryl Banks, Jill Thompson, and Alitha Martinez, with Becca Carey on letters, to cover the days of Madagascar. There are zebras, saber-tooth tigers, and warriors with spears, all lushly coloured. Then we leap to Denver Colorado, with its good ol’ white jail guards and a black detective, where Nubia pontificates about morals, struggles, and lessons in humanity. If the speeches and lecturing gets a bit long in the tooth, so be it. And then we’re off to the future, where there is a remembrance of the days of violence, and a joy in acknowledging that those ‘rough’ days are in the past.

Altogether, the three stories knit a quilt of female strength through enlightenment, victory over violence, and the potential for sunny days to come.

DC, Nubia Coronation Special #1, $5.99 for 42 pages of content.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
