Space Job #1, from Dark Horse, written by David A Goodman, takes place on a spaceship. Danny Sheridan has big dreams, and a bigger helping of pompous self-importance.

The 29-year-old former chef’s assistant has had his dreams realized: he is to become First Officer of the SS Bush! But aboard the new ship, his plans change drastically. The SS Bush is not decked out as he had imagined, and we are pulled into the wild world of outer space chaos.

Artist Alvaro Sarraseca illustrates the sterility and clean-lined attributes of spaceship life. His characters are well rendered, the expressions and poses lifelike enough to engage us. Okay, the new first officer and the captain look far too similar, leading to confusion, but otherwise, it’s clear sailing. Jordi Escuin Llorach’s colours give us the low-key fluorescent LED illuminated bridge, the consistent atmosphere of spacecraft, and the brilliant vistas of outer space. Lettering by Mauro Mantella.

Goodman writes the first issue while gaming his hand with concealed surprises, ensuring this title has start-up potential. It´s as interested in the carryings-on of the crew as it is in hurtling to the next quadrant. Check it out!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
