With an absolutely awesome front cover by Jessica Fong, the new issue of Poison Ivy, “Chapter 11”, continues to infect us with its message and character drama.

Writer G. Willow Wilson puts us in the GLOP cult just in time for a spa treatment, while the parasitic fungus continues to mutate and mutilate. It’s part hallucination, part liver damage, apparently, but boy, the girls are in trouble! I love the smooth dialogue, the switching of points of view, the way that Wilson can pull me, the casual reader, into this story at will, without disorienting me.

Artist Marcio Takara uses a strong gestural line, accurately placed and fun to observe. Takara’s faces are descriptive, the gestures natural and dramatic, with a decorative sense of play abounding around the spa setting. But Takara can also dish out the horror, no worries. There is a nice flow to some passages, where the panel borders disappear and we float trancelike, into the air.

Colourist Arif Prianto keeps a fragrant, multihued palette, with bold fresh applications of colour, mostly vivid cools. Lettering by Hassan Otsmane-ElHaou. Amazing variant covers.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
