Until recently, I didn’t know I needed a Wolverine and Ghost Rider team-up.

Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance – Alpha #1 pits Ghost Rider and Wolverine against supernatural forces stalking a child in this debuting issue of the 4 part series by Benjamin Percy and Geoff Shaw.

I picked this series up because Wolverine and Ghost Rider were once part of a short-lived incarnation of the Fantastic Four alongside Joe Fixit, and Spider-Man, after the original team was abducted by Skrulls. It was my favorite version of the team because it brought together a bunch of characters I didn’t really expect to crossover.

Ghost Rider and Wolverine are two very different characters, yet they both have a dark history of finding themselves in disturbing situations no ordinary human could stomach. This series will return them to the routine nerve-and-limb-tearing adventures they already face in their solo lives, only this time together.

In this issue, they are drawn to each other to solve a case from their past, which details the first time they met and then fought one another–it’s not a team-up if our heroes aren’t fighting each other over a misunderstanding.

I went into this issue expecting intense violence. Instead, there was gore with disturbing context that turned off my appetite and evoked the intended discomfort it was for. The combination of Shaw’s gritty aesthetic and Percy’s history and understanding of these complex characters sets the tone for the rest of the series.

Because it’s the first issue, the plot hasn’t unveiled itself yet but judging from what went down in this issue, I expect the pace to blast off in the next. This may be a short series, but any story with a Ghost Rider-Wolverine crossover is welcomed and I hope this isn’t the last collaboration between the two.
