I remember when some no-name (at the time) guy started writing JSA and was talking about how he would love a run at the Flash. That guy eventually went on to REBIRTH Green Lantern and bring us a BRIGHTER DAY as he revamped the entire DC universe. I was nervous when then-DC rookie, Scott Snyder, took on Batman. When a guy named Charles Soule took on my favorite character, Swamp Thing, I didn’t know how I was going to feel. As a comic book fan, it can be both exciting and nerve-wracking when a high-profile book is given to a new, seemingly unheard-of writer. I’m not as in the comic book loop as I was a decade ago, so maybe he is not so new…but Daredevil writer Saliden Ahmed is new to me.

That being said, Daredevil #1 is a breath of fresh air! I haven’t read a Daredevil book in years but the writing gives the reader everything they need to keep up. The tone of the book leans heavily into the religious backstory of Daredevil respectfully without falling into the trope of being too preachy or, on the other end, blasphemous. This book also has a bit of a horror vibe. The art is beautiful and clever as it brings a physical representation to DD’s sensational sensory powers. The plot takes what would usually be an overdone, “superhero forgets who they are” romp and makes it something unpredictable and new. There was no point where I felt like I was getting tired reading this book…not even when the 7 deadly sins avatar of Sloth told me I should.

This one here?…it might drag me back to Hell’s Kitchen! 5/5 Krackles! No Notes!
