Writer H. S. Tak and artist Brent McKee (colourist Sebastian Cheng, letterer Joel Rodriguez) launch us in space, in Red Shift #1 from Scout Comics.

The mining outpost at Arcadia Plains, Mars is no great place. Mining is a dangerous job and the crew of abrasive large blue-collar workers is no picnic to be with. And when the Academy announces that miner Hellener Drake has been appointed to travel on an upcoming space voyage, it triggers memories of Hellener’s mother, who died on the exact same mission years earlier. Everyone’s happy for Hellener except him. Hellener is hell-bent on NOT going!

This story has a good dramatic sci-fi concept behind it. It’s full of strong characters and danger. McKee’s art coupled with Cheng’s colouring gives us a highly realistic, believable atmosphere for confrontation and exploration. I’ll be on the lookout on the cosmic horizon for the second issue in August, and maybe I’ll see you looking it up too!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
